Residents and businesses in Wem are set to benefit from the return of face-to-face banking services after confirmation by LINK, the UK’s cash access and ATM network, that the town will receive a new Banking Hub. Helen Morgan MP at the opening of a Banking Hub in Market Drayton in April 2026Banking hubs are a shared banking space, similar to a traditional bank branch, but available to everyone. When opened, the hub will consist of a counter service operated by Post Office employees, where customers of any bank can withdraw and deposit cash and make bill payments. In addition, there will be private spaces where customers can speak to community bankers from their own bank for more complicated matters that require specialist knowledge or privacy. The banks will be working on a rotating basis, so there will be staff from different banks available on different days. - Advertisement -Wem has been without a bank branch since 2018, leaving residents and local businesses reliant on a single Post Office and poor cash services. The banking hub will be delivered by Cash Access UK. Over the next few weeks, it will begin to engage with the local community and will start to look for potential sites. Chris Ashton, Chief Commercial Officer, LINK: “We’re very pleased to recommend a banking hub in Wem. Listening to local communities is a key part of our process, and it is clear that when Wem’s hub opens it will be a vital resource for the local community and high street. ”Helen Morgan, MP for North Shropshire: “I am delighted that Wem is getting a much needed banking hub. Businesses and residents told me about the need for banking facilities in the town and I was pleased to meet with LINK in May to put the case for a hub in Wem. “It’s great news that LINK has listened and the hub will mean that people and business owners in Wem will no longer have to travel miles to deal with their bank. “Thank you to everyone who backed my campaign and thank you to LINK for this vital service. “Banking Hubs are proving hugely successful in supporting high streets, helping businesses grow and ensuring residents can continue to access face-to-face banking when they need it. “This is a significant step forward for Wem, but the long-term success of the hub will depend on people using it. I would encourage residents, community groups and businesses to make full use of the new facility so we can demonstrate just how important these services are to our town. ”There are currently 241 hubs open across the UK.
