Timely sugarcane payments key to farmers, rural economy in Uttar Pradesh - ChiniMandi

LUCKNOW: Timely payment for sugarcane is becoming increasingly important for farmers in Uttar Pradesh, where the crop plays a major role in the rural economy and provides income that supports both farm operations and household expenses. For many cane growers in the state, the money received from sugar mills after supplying their crop is used to finance the next farming cycle. Timely payments allow farmers to buy seeds, fertiliser and diesel, pay irrigation costs and prepare their fields for the next crop without having to depend heavily on loans, Janta Se Rishta reported. The income also helps families meet expenses such as children’s education, healthcare, household needs and repayment of existing debt. Delays in cane payments can force farmers to borrow money to meet these expenses, increasing their financial burden. The effect of cane payments is also felt across villages in Uttar Pradesh. Once farmers receive their dues, part of the money is spent at local grocery stores, fertiliser and seed shops, tractor and farm equipment services, dairies, pharmacies and other businesses. This keeps money circulating through rural markets and supports local trade. The state’s sugarcane economy also provides work to thousands of people involved in harvesting, loading and transporting cane. Tractor and trolley operators, transporters, labourers, sugar mill workers and other service providers depend on the sector. Regular payments to farmers help maintain activity across this wider supply chain. Uttar Pradesh has also expanded the use of digital services to provide farmers with information about their sugarcane supplies and payments. The state Sugarcane Development Department’s e-Ganna services and the Cane UP Enquiry portal allow growers to access survey details, sugarcane calendars, supply tickets, weighing information, SMS records, cane prices and complaint-related information. The digital system can help farmers track their crop and payment details without having to repeatedly visit government offices, while also improving access to information. The price received for sugarcane remains another important issue. The Centre has fixed the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) at Rs 365 per quintal for the 2026-27 sugar season, while Uttar Pradesh also determines a State Advised Price (SAP) for cane. For farmers, however, the price alone does not determine the benefit from the crop. Timely payment is equally important because it enables them to prepare for the next crop, repay loans and meet family expenses. In Uttar Pradesh, therefore, sugarcane payments have an impact well beyond individual farmers. Money paid to growers moves through village shops, farm-input dealers, workers, transporters and other businesses, making timely cane payments an important driver of rural cash flow and economic activity in the state.
