Stock Market Crash: 6 reasons behind the market turmoil as investors lose Rs 3 lakh crore; Know factors behind the sharp fall

The Indian stock market ended sharply lower on Tuesday as crude oil prices surged and tensions in West Asia increased again. Fresh selling by foreign investors and weakness in global markets also hurt investor sentiment. The Sensex fell 561. 46 points (0. 72 percent) to close at 77,054. 94, while the Nifty dropped 158. 95 points (0. 66 percent) to end at 24,052. 05. The Bank Nifty also declined by as much as 670 points during the session. Among the 30 Sensex stocks, only six ended higher, while 24 closed in the red. Shares of HCL Tech fell more than 4 percent, while Bajaj Finserv, IndiGo, SBI, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Larsen & Toubro also lost over 2 percent. The total market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies also dropped by around Rs 3 lakh crore, falling from Rs 482. 41 lakh crore to Rs 479. 40 lakh crore. Why did the Indian stock market fall?1. Rising tensions between the US and IranThe US carried out military strikes against Iran for the third straight night. US President Donald Trump also announced a naval blockade on Iranian ships and proposed a 20 percent transit fee for protecting the Strait of Hormuz, increasing geopolitical tensions. 2. Crude oil prices jumpedBrent crude oil rose 1. 63 percent to $84. 60 per barrel, its highest level since the US and Iran signed a ceasefire agreement on June 17. Higher oil prices raised concerns about inflation and increased costs for oil-importing countries like India. 3. Weak global marketsAsian markets traded lower, with South Korea’s Kospi falling 3. 71%. Japan’s Nikkei 225, China’s Shanghai Composite, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng also ended in the red. US markets also showed signs of weakness. 4. Foreign investors continued sellingForeign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 3,062. 27 crore on Monday. Continuous selling by overseas investors added pressure on Indian equities and weakened overall market sentiment. 5. Market volatility increasedIndia’s volatility index, India VIX, rose nearly 3 percent to around 14, indicating that investors have become more cautious about the market outlook. 6. Rupee weakened against the US dollarThe Indian rupee came under pressure along with other Asian currencies due to rising geopolitical tensions. It fell 48 paise to 96. 16 against the US dollar after opening at 95. 95 in the interbank foreign exchange market. Market breadth remained weakOut of 4,433 stocks traded on the BSE, 1,502 advanced, while 2,735 declined and 196 remained unchanged. A total of 180 stocks hit the upper circuit, while 185 stocks ended at the lower circuit, reflecting broad-based weakness in the market.
