Sabah’s economy up 5. 1% in 202502-Jul-2026, 15:0502 Jul 2026, 15:05Statistics department says services, mining and quarrying remained the main drivers of the state's economy as GDP rose to RM88. 8 billion. The statistics department said Sabah’s economy expanded in line with national growth, with services remaining the biggest contributor. KOTA KINABALU:Sabah’s economy grew 5. 1% in 2025, up sharply from 1. 2% the previous year, according to the statistics department. In a statement today, it said Sabah’s GDP at current prices rose to RM88. 8 billion from RM84. 5 billion in 2024, an increase of RM4. 3 billion. The department said Sabah’s performance was in line with Malaysia’s broader economic expansion, which grew 5. 2% in 2025, maintaining the same pace as the previous year. “The services, mining and quarrying sectors remained the largest contributors to Sabah’s GDP, accounting for a combined 74. 1%, followed by agriculture at 13. 9%. “Manufacturing and construction contributed 7. 2% and 4. 4%, respectively,” it said. The statistics department said the services sector grew 4. 5%, up from 4. 2% in 2024, supported by tourism-related activities including wholesale and retail trade, food and beverage services, accommodation, and government services. The mining and quarrying sector, Sabah’s second-largest contributor, rebounded 4. 9% after contracting 4. 9% in 2024, driven by higher crude oil, condensate, and natural gas production. Agriculture returned to growth, expanding 0. 9% after shrinking 3. 2% a year earlier, helped by improved performance in the crop subsector, particularly palm oil. Manufacturing growth accelerated to 5. 0% from 1. 2%, supported by higher production of vegetable and animal oils and fats, as well as food processing. Construction remained the fastest-growing sector, expanding 28. 3% after growing 21. 5% in 2024, driven by broad-based growth across all subsectors, particularly civil engineering. In terms of GDP per capita, Sabah recorded an increase to RM31,125 from RM30,575 in 2024, although it remained well below the national average of RM59,167. The state contributed 5. 1% to Malaysia’s economy, unchanged from the previous year, retaining its position as the country’s seventh-largest economy.
