As the global banking industry undergoes rapid transformation, innovation is emerging as the critical differentiator for corporate banking in Islamic finance. This sector, like many others, is now driven by a demand for tailored solutions and influenced by a dynamic macroeconomic landscape, impacted by trends such as digitisation, sustainability and regulatory evolution. This is particularly significant for Islamic banking, where documentation processes and procedural timelines have historically been factors influencing public engagement with Islamic finance. This status quo has changed since then with traditional processes rapidly transitioning to fully digital operations, while products are being re-engineered and processes are structured for convenience. With the UAE’s business environment witnessing expanding cross-border trade and increasing investment in the country, further demand is created for Shariah-compliant financing and broader adoption of Islamic finance products and services. Underpinned by the National Strategy for Islamic Finance and Halal Industry in the UAE, there is steady growth in Islamic banking assets since 2021 across corporate and investment segments. Therefore, Islamic banking has become a respected and impactful source of finance, increasingly receiving interest from corporations, governments and investors seeking ethical banking solutions that give them peace of mind. For instance, Ijarah and Murabaha are among the most employed financing asset structures by Islamic banks in the UAE. As banks embrace digital transformation with a customer-first approach, corporate banking executives are now assuming the role of advisors, who provide the ‘human touch’. A ‘trusted advisor’ approach builds trust and ensures funding moves in sync with commercial activity, offering clients enhanced real-time liquidity and streamlined operations, while embodying foundational Shariah principles of partnership and profit-sharing. This approach has directly led to a significant increase in our corporate client base in the last year. Moving away from purely transactional relationships, the onus on customer experience is driving real-time services, processes that use the full functionality of cloud computing, digital trade and seamless integration of the bank’s offerings to make financial tasks easier, within enterprise systems, supply chain platforms and digital marketplaces. For example, a client recently came to us with the need to open an Escrow account. Further discussions identified the potential opportunity in offering an integrated payment processing solution for collection from various touchpoints. Building this synergy within the customer’s ecosystem by automating manual tasks made it more efficient by reducing time required for tasks, lowering operational cost and enhancing the working capital cycle. In an environment of market disrupted dynamics, banks must embrace new methodology. By using more information like how money moves, how different industries are doing and how businesses operate, banks can make smarter lending choices. This helps them provide loans that truly match how businesses are growing. Connectivity across markets, delivering purposeful, customer-centric financial solutions and supporting long-term prosperity with a human touch, will differentiate the banks of the future. With foundations built on profit and loss sharing, Islamic finance institutions showcase real economic activity and value by improving efficiencies as well as attracting new customers across boundaries. This dynamic and resilient financial ecosystem is then poised for sustained growth and leadership.
