Last Updated:June 24, 2026, 19:04 ISTNew data shows both urban and leisure destinations are seeing a sharp rise in long-stay work travellers. From Marathahalli To Fort Kochi: India's Workcation Economy Is Growing Beyond Holiday DestinationsThe workcation, once a pandemic-era improvisation, a practical workaround for Zoom-fatigued professionals suddenly untethered from their desks, has matured into something more deliberate. It has become, for a growing number of Indian travellers, a conscious restructuring of everyday life: one in which productivity and exploration are not traded against each other, but pursued in parallel. “Workations in India have evolved from being a temporary remote-work trend to becoming a conscious lifestyle choice," says Pranav Dangi, Founder and CEO of The Hosteller, whose network of properties across the country has become one of the most reliable barometers of where this new travelling professional is choosing to land. “People are looking for destinations that allow them to blend productivity with exploration, extending their stays and integrating travel into their everyday routines rather than taking traditional breaks from work. Bangalore And Mumbai Lead The ChargeThat India’s tech capital would feature prominently in the workcation conversation is perhaps unsurprising, but the scale of growth Dangi’s properties have recorded is remarkable. “Marathahalli has grown nearly 70x and Manyata Tech Park 8. 7x year-on-year," he says of The Hosteller’s Bangalore portfolio, numbers that point to something specific: professionals who aren’t escaping the city so much as choosing to inhabit it differently, staying longer, moving more fluidly, demanding accommodation that keeps pace with how they actually work. Indiranagar — the city’s most liveable, café-lined neighbourhood — has seen strong uptake too, the three locations together signalling that Bangalore’s workcation moment is citywide, not confined to any single pocket. Mumbai’s emergence as a workcation market is, if anything, the more unexpected story. “Mumbai has registered an impressive 18. 5x growth year-on-year," says Dangi, “driven by demand for well-connected locations that support flexible work and travel. " That India’s most relentlessly urban city — long thought too frenetic, too expensive, too much to function as a slow-living base — is being reappraised by a new kind of mobile worker suggests that the workcation impulse is less about escape and more about agency: the city, on your own terms. The Leisure Circuit: Goa Holds, Manali And Kochi RiseOn the leisure side, Goa remains the undisputed anchor of India’s workcation map. Its combination of reliable connectivity, a café culture already calibrated to the long-stay visitor, and a built-in community of like-minded nomads has kept it consistently ahead of the curve. “Old Goa has grown 6. 8x, Mandrem 3. 8x, and Anjuna has recorded 87% growth year-on-year," Dangi notes — numbers that suggest demand has spread well beyond Goa’s most obvious workcation pockets, reaching quieter, more residential corners of the coast. But the more telling story may lie further afield. “Destinations such as Old Manali and Fort Kochi are gaining traction among travellers seeking slower, more immersive experiences," says Dangi, “registering 74% and 58% growth respectively. " Both are destinations associated with immersion rather than efficiency — Manali for its altitude and unhurried pace, Kochi for its layered history, its walkable heritage quarters and a creative culture that has long attracted artists, writers and independent workers. That both are gaining ground as workcation destinations signals something beyond connectivity: these travellers are actively seeking somewhere to be, not just somewhere to work. What the Workcation Worker Actually WantsDangi is precise about what’s driving this evolution. “Travellers are no longer choosing workcations simply to change their surroundings," he says. “They are actively seeking destinations that offer community, culture, nature and convenience while allowing them to remain productive. " The emphasis on community is significant. The loneliness of remote work — something rarely discussed openly in the productivity discourse — is a real and persistent pressure, and the best workcation destinations have understood this implicitly: they offer not just a desk and decent Wi-Fi, but the chance to be around other people who have made the same choice. What this shift is producing, cumulatively, is a fundamental rethinking of how India’s professional class relates to both work and place. The old model, grind in the city, escape on leave, is giving way to something more fluid and more honest about what working adults actually need. Not a break from their lives, but a different life, running alongside the same responsibilities. “This shift is creating opportunities for a wider range of destinations across India to emerge as year-round workation hotspots," says Dangi, “and is fundamentally reshaping how people think about both work and travel.
