On September 9 Coinbase folds its International Exchange into Deribit, unifying its derivatives back end. Both moves push toward one venue where offshore capital trades crypto and traditional assets against shared margin. Coinbase opened trading inWTI and Brent crude oil perpetual futureson August 3, extending its derivatives menu past crypto and precious metals into the commodity that sits closest to global inflation and macro positioning. The two contracts, listed as WTIOIL-PERP and BRENTOIL-PERP, are open only to eligible traders outside the United States, settle in USDC, and carry no expiry date, so a position can stay open indefinitely without the monthly roll that defines conventional oil futures. On September 9 Coinbase will shut down its standalone International Exchange andmove institutional derivatives accounts onto Deribit, the options venue itbought for $2. 9 billion. Oil perps are the third asset class Coinbase bolted on this yearCoinbase Markets started the two oil markets at 09:00 UTC on August 3. Before oil, the same desk had already listed gold and silver perpetuals, and back in March it rolled out perpetual futures tied to individual stocks for non-US customers. Each of those products runs on the risk engine that already backs Coinbase’s crypto derivatives, with cross-margining that lets a trader post collateral once and hold crypto, metals, equities and now energy exposure against the same balance. That shared plumbing is the whole idea. Coinbase is not standing up a separate desk for every asset it lists. It routes everything through one margin and matching layer and drops new reference assets on top, which is why oil went live without any new account type or settlement currency for existing derivatives users. March 2026Single-stock perpetualsNon-US onlyUSDC-settled, no expiry2026Gold and silver perpetualsNon-US onlyUSDC-settled, no expiryAugust 3, 2026WTI and Brent oil perpetualsNon-US onlyUSDC-settled, no expiryWhy a perpetual, and why oil specificallyA perpetual future tracks the price of an underlying asset with no settlement date attached. Standard oil futures expire on a fixed schedule, so a trader who wants to stay in the market has to close the expiring contract and open the next one, a roll that costs money and adds paperwork. The perpetual strips that out. To keep its price glued to the real oil benchmark, the exchange runs a funding rate that longs and shorts pay each other at set intervals, the same mechanism that holds Bitcoin and Ether perps in line with spot. Anyone who has traded crypto perps already understands the cost structure. Oil is a deliberate target. WTI is the reference grade for US crude, while Brent is priced off North Sea production and used across Europe, Africa and much of Asia, so between them the two contracts price most of the physical trade and feed directly into inflation expectations and broad risk sentiment. Listing them separately, instead of one blended oil price, lets a trader take a position on the gap between the American and international benchmarks rather than just the direction of oil. Coinbase is not opening this ground on its own. Hyperliquid, a decentralized venue, had already pulled real money into the same trade. Its WTI and Brent perpetuals were clearing north of $700 million in combined daily volume, roughly $487 million onWTIand $225 million onBrent, as of Aug 4. Intercontinental Exchange, the company behind the Brent benchmark and the owner of the New York Stock Exchange, went further and paired with OKX to list WTI and Brent perpetuals thatreference ICE’s own futures prices. The appetite for commodity perps on crypto rails was there before Coinbase printed its pair. The Deribit migration is the other half of the same planThe oil launch widens what Coinbase sells. The Deribit migration tightens how it runs. On September 9 Coinbase will pause International Exchange trading for about 30 minutes, cancel every open order, settle open positions at the prevailing mark price so profit and loss is locked in, and then rebuild identical positions on Deribit at that same settlement price throughmatched migration trades. Balances and collateral move across on their own. Open orders do not, and neither do API keys or margin loans. That last point is where the work lands on trading desks. Firms have to generate fresh Deribit API keys during a read-only window that opens August 31, clear any outstanding margin loans before the cutover, and rewrite their integrations, because the protocol switches from REST to JSON-RPC 2. 0 on a new matching engine Deribit calls Starbase. There is no parallel-running period. Anyone whose systems are not migrated by September 9 simply stops trading. Clients who want no part of the transition have until August 28 to close positions and shut their accounts, and anything left open after that is treated as consent to move. August 28Last day to opt out by closing all positions and the International Exchange account. August 31Deribit subaccounts open in read-only mode. Generate new API keys and confirm portfolio mappings. Before cutoverRepay all margin loans in full. API keys and loans do not carry over. September 9Roughly 30-minute trading pause. Orders canceled, positions force-settled and rebuilt on Deribit. The scale behind the venue explains why Coinbase is willing to force the disruption. Deribit is thelargest crypto options exchange by open interest, and the deal that pulled it in was Coinbase’s biggest to date. $2. 9BAcquisition price for Deribit~$60BDeribit platform open interest$1T+Volume traded over the past year$30M+Deribit July transaction revenue125+Added perp contracts for current Deribit usersWhat changes for traders and for Coinbase’s revenue mixFor a non-US trader, one account can now hold crypto, metals, stocks and oil under shared margin, which cuts the capital that would otherwise sit idle across several venues. The convenience carries a cost that institutions usually try to avoid. Running spot, options and multi-asset perps through a single counterparty removes the diversification that comes from spreading a book over more than one exchange, and Coinbase already had a service disruption on July 14 that hit transfers and trading. The more a desk consolidates, the more of it sits behind one door. On the revenue side, derivatives volumes tend to run well above spot, and income from funding rates and liquidations is steadier than the cyclical trading fees Coinbase leans on today. Collapsing two international derivatives engines into one also removes the expense of maintaining parallel systems. Coinbase told investors that Deribit would add roughly $10 million in quarterly technology and administrative expense but turn accretive to adjusted EBITDA immediately after close, with deal-related amortization pushing reported costs higher over the next few quarters. US clients sit apart from most of this. Their Coinbase Prime relationships stay as they are, and once the combined platform is live they will be able to trade crypto options for the first time, but the oil and stock perpetuals remain closed to them under current US rules. The offshore everything exchange, for nowCoinbase has described its own goal as building an “Everything Exchange,” and the oil listing plus the Deribit consolidation show what that means in practice: a single margin stack, a growing shelf of reference assets, and a back end concentrated on one matching engine. The wall around it is geography. Every non-crypto perpetual Coinbase has launched this year, from stocks to metals to oil, is fenced off from American users, so the everything exchange is, at this stage, an everything exchange for capital based outside the United States. Rivals are pushing the same track from other angles. ICE has put money into OKX and now references its own oil prices on a crypto venue, while Hyperliquid keeps pulling equity and commodity perp volume with no traditional data pipeline at all. Whether Coinbase’s single-venue efficiency pitch outweighs the appeal of keeping a second and third counterparty is the part that traders, not press releases, will settle over the coming quarters.
