Brigg residents and businesses are set for a major banking boost, with vital face-to-face services securing a permanent home in the heart of the town. The town’s banking hub will move into a new long-term home at The Buttercross, one of Brigg’s best-known historic buildings, protecting access to cash and everyday banking support following the closure of most independent bank branches in the town. Work is planned to begin at The Buttercross from Tuesday 1 September, with an opening date to be confirmed. The hub currently operates from a temporary base at The Angel and gives customers of major banks and building societies access to essential services without having to travel out of town. North Lincolnshire Council has worked with Cash Access UK to secure the permanent town-centre location and support the future of face-to-face banking in Brigg. Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This is fantastic news for Brigg and something we have worked hard to secure alongside ward members Carl and Nigel Sherwood and our MP Martin Vickers. “Brigg is a busy, successful market town which serves a much wider rural community. Thousands come into the town to shop, work, visit the markets and use local services, so maintaining access to cash and face-to-face banking here really matters. “While the major banks have increasingly chosen to withdraw from high streets, we have been determined to do what we can to protect access to these services for residents and businesses. “The banking hub has already proved there is real demand in Brigg. Giving it a permanent home in The Buttercross means we can build on that success, keep an important service right in the heart of the town and bring another valuable use to one of Brigg’s most recognisable buildings. “It is good for residents, good for local businesses and another reason for people from across the surrounding area to come into Brigg. ”Bringing together services from different banks in one shared location, banking hub customers can use the counter service to withdraw and pay in cash, deposit cheques, check balances and pay utility bills, regardless of which major bank or building society they use. Local businesses can also access cash and change services, helping them continue to trade and serve customers who prefer to pay in cash. Community bankers from individual banks attend the hub on designated days and can provide private support with more complicated issues. The temporary hub at The Angel will remain open while work progresses on the permanent site. It is currently open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, with counter services available throughout the week and individual banks attending on designated days. Gareth Oakley, CEO at Cash Access UK: “We are delighted to be able to confirm the permanent location for the Brigg Banking Hub. “We know how popular the hub has been in its temporary location and are confident of the key role that the hub will continue to play in its permanent home, providing access to cash and banking services to the local community. ”Further details, including the permanent hub’s opening date and any updates to the community banker timetable, will be announced closer to completion.
